Attachments are emotional bonds formed in childhood based on the behavior of our caregivers. Whether we form secure or insecure attachments is dependent upon how our needs for attention, love, and growth are met in our earliest formative relationships. The patterns set in place can carry forward to affect how we form adult attachments, including friendships, romantic partners, and the bonds of power exchange.

This presentation will examine the basics of Attachment Theory, how attachment styles are expressed in adulthood, and how they are manifested in different BDSM identities. Many of us in the lifestyle come from histories and pasts that unfortunately involve surviving abuse and trauma. Those things can leave us with unknown trap doors and landmines that could BOOM at any time. Having lived through trauma and feeling broken, some, despite fear, push through and find community and learn to see their value despite being told, or allowed to feel otherwise. Make no mistake, it is not easy. This discussion, though difficult for many, can help us realize the inherent strength we possess as well as the value we bring to any proverbial table while actively putting into practice small things we can utilize to undo the effects of trauma that left us questioning our place.
